Have you ever found the handle of a tilt-and-turn window sash turned to the wrong position and now can’t close it?
Often, tilt-and-turn windows with a tilt sash can suddenly lock without any apparent reason.
This can happen with all types of window frames, and the tilt sash might play this trick on you. Don’t worry—it’s very simple to fix!
First of all, I want to reassure you—the window can’t fall on you. It’s just open in the wrong position.
I recommend watching the video; in cases like these, a video is worth a thousand words.

How to Unlock a Tilt Sash Stuck in the Wrong Position on Tilt-and-Turn Windows
A tilt-and-turn window can lock in two ways:
- With the handle in the horizontal position
- With the handle in the vertical position
In both cases, the first thing to do is to locate the mechanism that locks the window: the false operation.
I will immediately show you how to find the false operation when the tilt sash is stuck open:
The “false operation” is a tab that you find on the side of the handle and can have the following forms:

Unlocking a Tilt-and-Turn Window with the Handle in the Horizontal Position
A tilt-and-turn window in the tilt-open position should have the handle in the vertical position. If it’s currently stuck in the horizontal position, follow these 4 simple steps:
- Align the sash at the top on the hinge side
- Hold down the tab of the false operation
- Turn the handle to the horizontal position
- Bring the sash close and close the window by turning the handle to the vertical position
Done! The tilt sash is now a piece of cake! Well done.

Unlocking a Tilt-and-Turn Sash with the Handle in the Vertical Position
A tilt-and-turn window in the sash-open position should have the handle in the horizontal position. If your window is stuck with the handle in the vertical position and you can’t close it, follow these very simple 3 steps:
- Hold down the tab of the false operation
- Turn the handle to the horizontal position
- Bring the sash close and close the window by turning the handle to the vertical position
I hope this little trick helped you solve your problem.
